Antonio Alemanno

About

Antonio Alemanno (IT) is a professionally trained multi-instrumentalist (double bass, cello, oud, charango, frame drums, analog synthesizers and electronics) and composer, graduated at Sibelius Academy in Global Music (MA) Helsinki – Finland.

Throughout the years, he has developed a distinctive rhythmical and melodic approach, in which he borrows and blends the different colors and nuances of the instruments he plays. His extensive research on the double bass has allowed him to go past traditional techniques and to stretch the diversity range and possibilities of the instrument. He reveals the body parts of the bass as percussive elements and finds intriguing bass lines that carry the roots of more than one genre. The unusual fifth string on his instrument allows his bow to give the bass a melodic voice that reaches unexpected heights.

In his work, Antonio is influenced by a broad range of genres, including World, Arabic and South American music, Afro, Swing, Folk and Electronics, allowing him to make endless crossovers.

His background in dance and his substantial collaborations with dancers, choreographers, fine artists and physical theater performers have given him the opportunity to extensively investigate the musicality and flow of movement and acting. He is keen to provoke a dialogue between spatial presence and sound, creating an intricately shaped, multi-disciplinary world.

A lack of confinement to style, instrument and discipline opposed by skillfulness, a big sensitivity to atmosphere and an inventive spirit define Antonio and his work.

Antonio is the founder of the Antonio Alemanno Ensemble, co-founder of the duo Antonio & Celine and The Smokey Cats and collaborates among others with Ahmad Al-Khatib, Nabil Bey (Radiodervish), Wassim Halal, Peppe Frana, Juuso Hannukainen, Eero Savela, Canberk Ulas, Claudio Prima, Maria Mazzotta, Rocco Nigro, Vito De Lorenzi, Emanuele Coluccia, Shadi Fathi, Wouter De Belder, Zwermers and many others.

He has composed music for dance and circus performances and for commercials (Circo Aereo, Hurjaruuth, Mirva Mäkinen, Atsushi Takenouchi, Kaaos – Dance Ability Finland, Miguel Angel Berna’s Company, Silja Puranen, Trippin Angels, Dansblok and many others) and has performed in over 20 countries worldwide.
